I don’t know about you, but I have way more food than I have pantry space. We really love our food in this house. It probably doesn’t help that I really stock up when the items I normally buy go on sale. And then we do a lot of preserving, so we can, dehydrate and freeze foods to make the most of great food when it is in season.
So you can imagine that space is tight for food in our kitchen. But that’s no reason why it all has to be a mess. In fact, the only way to know what we have so we can use it before it goes bad, is to keep it all organized. This seems to be a problem for everyone I know. So what do you do with all of your food? Where do you store it all? And how do you keep it organized?
Those are fantastic questions! Questions that I hope to answer for you in this article. By keeping your food organized in the pantry, and setting aside dedicated space for it in other areas, not only will you save money and waste less, but you’ll get to enjoy all of the delicious food you took the time to pick out and purchase.

What to Do With All of Your Food
First things first, just like with every other room in your house, designate a place for everything. In our house, the flour and sugar are always in the second cabinet up, on the right, to the right of the stove. I use them the most and therefore want them close at hand for when I need them. The garlic powder, cinnamon and parsley are on that same shelf but on the left. The rest of our spices are in a cabinet to the left of our pantry with my canning supplies.
By keeping everything consistently in the same place, not only are they easier to find when we need them, but it’s easy to keep them organized. Start by deciding where you specifically want to keep everything, rather than just cramming it into the pantry. If you have kids, consider creating a shelf, corner, or basket just for them. And onions should be kept away from other foods, preferably in the dark.

Where to Store It All
I know that our little pantry couldn’t possibly contain all of our food, so we had to figure out where else to keep it. We found a beautiful cabinet for free that we use for spices and canning supplies, all of my canned food products and dried items go downstairs on a shelf in the basement, and we utilized the impossible to reach top shelves in our kitchen for storage.
When we didn’t have the basement, I used just about every hall closet I could find, and I even added shelves to a couple of them. I hope you’re thinking through alternative areas in your own home to store food as you’re reading. Maybe you don’t have a lot of food and you’re wondering why we keep so much around, and that’s okay too. To each his own.

Keeping Your Food Organized
There are so many great ways to store your food. I like to use baskets to keep everything in its place. I have shelves that line the inside of my pantry door, and when I used to keep tons of cans around of veggies, fruits and soups, I had can organizers that I purchased from Amazon to keep them separated.
Think about what you already have at home. There’s no need to go and spend a great deal of money on fancy organizers. Have some small boxes around, maybe shoe boxes or boxes from stuff you’ve purchased at the store? Perfect! Use those to gather tea bags together, or keep baking supplies in. If you have a spare dollar or two, visit the dollar store for some pretty cabinet liner to cover the front and label them.
This is just for you so it doesn’t have to be fancy, but it would be great for it to look nice. Be creative, use your imagination and figure out what you need to be more efficient in the kitchen.

Properly Storing Your Groceries
Just a few tips for helping your groceries last as long as possible… The majority of fresh fruits and veggies that you bring home need to go into the refrigerator, but in general, apples, bananas, oranges, and even avocados can be stored on the countertop, but only for week or so.
Bread and tortillas can stay on the counter, but once again I wouldn’t plan on them lasting for more than a week or so. Ideally, any groceries you store in the pantry that come in bags and boxes should be stored in sealed plastic or glass containers.
Finally, potatoes and onions are both best kept in dark, dry places but separately. If kept together, they will cause each other to go bad quickly. I understand if you don’t want to go out and buy containers for all of your food items, but at least keep them well sealed when not in use and keep in the refrigerator or freezer if you want them to last longer.

How to Save Space, Time and Money
This may be a little too much for some, and if this is true for you, just ignore this section. So many people buy loads of cans, boxes and bags full of food. You have a handful of different cereals, granolas, granola bars, cookies, snack bars, flavored oatmeals and dried meals in boxes. Why not just keep rice, flour, oatmeal, honey, and chocolate chips and make your own?
Most people have chips, trail mix, fruit snacks and other goodies in their pantries. Why not keep nuts, fresh fruits and veggies and make your own snacks? And what about all of the multitude of cans? Fruits, veggies, and soups and sauces that you can easily make on your own.
Contrary to popular opinion, you can save a great deal of money making your own products, not counting the health factor, and imagine the space you would save!
