Making your own laundry detergent can be quick and easy. It uses only three ingredients that can be found easily. In fact, we are going to make one on our own along with this recipe.

Especially if you have children in the house, or are considering making a new addition, it’s going to be important to consider all of the chemicals that are usually kept in the household for cleaning purposes. What do you do with them all? Put them out of reach, try to put them behind locked doors, hide them? All that does it makes it hard for you to get to them. I promise nothing will be too hard for your kids.

Maybe you just want to live better, and make life easier for yourself. That’s a great reason too! Switching to natural, non-caustic cleaners is a great way to make your house cleaner and healthier for you and anyone else living with you. Making your own cleaning items sounds like hard work and a lot of money, but this recipe is going to be so simple it will surprise you.

It uses baking soda, that you can get for cheap just about anywhere, washing soda, that can be made with baking soda at home, and castile soap, that can be found at any grocery store that offers organic items. I purchase my bottle about 2-3 years ago and I’m still going strong. I might be down to half a bottle or so now.

Ingredients

1/3 cup washing soda (I like to use my homemade version)
3/4 cup baking soda (extra to fight difficult stains)
1/2 cup castile soap

Instructions

-If you don’t already have washing soda on hand, what you do is heat your oven to 400 degrees F, pour a layer of baking soda out on a parchment paper lined baking sheet, and bake for 1 hour.

-Washing soda is rather dangerous to breathe in or get on your skin, so this is one ingredient you’ll want to be careful with. So just don’t breathe in while pulling it out of the oven to cool or pouring it into your sandwich bag for storage, and wash your hands afterward. Like you see in the picture, I wrote the directions for making more right on the bag so I didn’t forget.

-I found a really great tea dispenser at the thrift store that made for a great laundry detergent dispenser as well, with a spout on the bottom. It’s glass with a cork top and 1.5 gallons. Be sure to find a container that works for you, and then adjust the ingredient measurements likewise.

-Fill your container with very hot water.

-Add in your washing soda and mix until completely dissolved.

-Add in your baking soda and mix again until dissolved.

-Finally, mix in your castile soap and give it one more really good stir.

-Cover your container and let it cool completely before trying to move it.

-Use 1/3 cup detergent (2/3 cup for a large load) for each load.

-Notice that I even added directions to the front of my container with the size and servings so I don’t forget.

You can even add a little bit of essential oil of your choosing to add a nice scent to your detergent. Orange or lemon oil have antibacterial properties, and lavender is calming.

With homemade laundry detergent, you are also helping keep plastic out of the landfill and chemicals out of your home, not to mention the amazing skills you are learning/teaching your children. What more can you ask for?!
