More Fun and Easy Snacks You Can Make at Home

This article is full of even more fun and easy snacks you can make at home for cheap. Need snacks for work, something easy to grab on the weekends to snack on, or healthy items to pack in your children's lunchboxes? I've got a host of fun and easy healthy snacks that you can make at home. Feed your family healthier food and save money on your groceries. What more can you ask for?!

My little one and I love making snacks together. I love that we each get delicious healthy snacks to share at home using great ingredients, and I don’t have to worry about what we are eating. My toddler loves that he gets to cook with me, try out all kinds of fun foods, and he gets yummy snacks anytime he wants.

Making your own snacks can be super fun and easy, but what if I could tell you that it can also be less expensive and 100 times healthier than the stuff you get at the store? I love taking advantage of the great sales on oats, coconut, nuts, and even honey at my local organic grocery store, Sprouts. This week the oats were on sale for $0.69/lb and the nuts I get for $3.99/lb.

Don’t let the term organic scare you though. I rarely purchase anything organic, and I don’t have to, because I can count on the quality of all of the food I purchase at my local Sprouts. If you haven’t read my article on 5 Good Reasons You Should Switch to Buying Better Foods, this is one you don’t want to miss. In this article, I help you to save your valuable time and money on buying better quality groceries, just like me.

Homemade Granola

2 cups oats
3/4 cup shredded unsweetened coconut
1/2 cup almonds, chopped
2 tablespoons coconut sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon pink Himalayan salt
4 tablespoons coconut oil, melted
1/2 cup honey, melted
1 teaspoon vanilla
(optional) 1/3 cup seeds
(optional) 1/2 cup dried fruit

Preheat your oven to 300 degrees F and line 2 cookie sheets with parchment paper. Combine all ingredients in a large bowl until completely covered in honey and coconut oil. Spread out evenly on your cookie sheets and bake for 30 minutes.

When your granola is finished, immediately pour it into a large bowl and stir. Every 10-15 minutes or so, go back and stir it again to keep it loose while it cools. When cool, store it in an airtight container in the pantry. (Pictured is my Cranberry Pecan Granola mix.)

Fruit Popsicles

3 cups your chosen fruit or fruit mixture
2 cups water/coconut water

Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper. Core, peel, chop what ever fruit you’ve chosen if necessary and lay out evenly on your prepared cookie sheet. Pop in the freezer for an hour or 2 until fruit is frozen.

Pour frozen fruit in the food processor and process down to small pieces. (Not absolutely necessary if you’d rather have fruit chunks in your popsicles.) Pour these into your popsicle molds to the top and then fill in remaining gaps with water. Drop in your popsicle sticks and slide them into the freezer for about 4 hours or overnight is even better. Enjoy! (Pictured is a honeydew popsicle.)

Dehydrated Fruit

2-4lbs of your chosen fruit
Food dehydrator

Remove inedible parts of your fruit, slice up into 1/4 inch slices. Lay out evenly on your dehydrator trays. Set to fruit setting, if needed, and turn on. Let your dehydrator run overnight. Store in storage bags in the pantry. They are intended to last a lifetime this way.

You can also dehydrate fruits and veggies in the oven at low temperatures, but each fruit and veggie requires different times in the oven. (Pictured is dried pineapple.)

Fruit Sherbet

3 cups your chosen fruit or fruit mixture
2 cups water/coconut water
Food processor or blender

Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper. Core, peel, chop what ever fruit you’ve chosen if necessary and lay out evenly on your prepared cookie sheet. Pop in the freezer for an hour or 2 until fruit is frozen.

Pour frozen fruit in the food processor and process down to slush consistency. You may need a tiny bit of water. We really love watermelon and honeydew sherbet.

No Bake Cookies

3 cups oats
1 1/2 cups peanut butter, melted
1/2 cup honey, melted

Cover two cookie sheets with parchment paper. Combine all ingredients in a large bowl and mix well until all oats are coated and ingredients combined. Your cookies should be wet but not super sticky. Form into 1 tablespoon sized balls and lay out evenly on your cookie sheets.

Flatten with your hand to get desired look and then slide both sheets into the refrigerator. You’ll want to keep them stored in a storage bag in the fridge.

Oatmeal Blueberry Bread

2 cups whole wheat flour
1 cup oats
1/2 cup coconut sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon pink Himalayan salt
3/4 cup milk
1/2 cup coconut oil, melted
2 eggs
1 1/2 cups blueberries

Honestly there are so many varieties of homemade breads you can make, and you can check them out in my article on Fun Bread Recipes You Can Make Easily at Home (when I get it written). I chose to use this one because I love blueberries.

Just preheat your oven to 350 degrees F and line a loaf pan with parchment paper. Combine all ingredients in a large bowl, saving the blueberries for the end. When smooth and well mixed, stir in your blueberries gently. I chose to use my homemade blueberry pie filling for this recipe to get the blueberry everywhere.

Slide into the oven and bake for 1 hour. Yum!

Spinach Dip

8oz cream cheese
1 cup sour cream
1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
4 tablespoons minced garlic
8oz chopped spinach
1/2 chopped onion
pinch of pink Himalayan salt

Combine all ingredients together in a small crockpot and cook on high for 2-3 hours, stirring every so often. Enjoy with chips!

Guacamole

2 avocados
1 cup salsa (I use my homemade salsa)
pinch of salt

Cut your avocados in half all the way around the pit. Twist the halves to separate and use your knife to remove the pit. Gently slide the flesh of your avocados out of their skin with a spoon into a small bowl. Add salsa and salt and mash until smooth. Yum! Serve with chips.

Handful of Nuts

If you prepare bags of nuts separated by type, and even bags of mixed nuts ahead of time and put them in a convenient place in the pantry, they are easy to grab and go when someone needs a snack.

We all love nuts in our house, so we even have a bowl of them sitting out on the table to grab as we walk by.
