I don’t know about you, but everyday that I look at the red hand soap at our various bathroom sinks, I cringe. I know what ingredients and chemicals are in each of the commercial hand soaps on the market and how harmful they are to your health, but every day something else has come up that’s more important. With two kids in the house, it happens.

But to me, that’s been an even bigger reason to get off my tush and get back in the habit of making all of our own household products again. I don’t like thinking of my little ones being exposed to all of those chemicals when we wash their hands. So today was the day that I made hand soap, and wrote my Making Your Own Liquid Hand Soap at Home blog. It really is way too easy for me not to have done it before today, but now I won’t have to worry about it anymore.

Start with all of your supplies, including soap containers, cheese grater and bar of soap, a small pot, a spoon, and 4 cups of water. I used my homemade coconut oil soap for this recipe, but you could also use some great natural soaps like Nels Faptha, or Dr. Bronner’s.

Now it’s your turn!

Ingredients

4 cups of filtered water
1 cup of grated hand soap (I used my homemade coconut oil soap)

Instructions

  1. Start by collecting all of your ingredients and supplies. You’ll need a small pot, a spoon, a cheese grater, a bar of natural soap, 4 cups of water, and at least one clean but empty soap container.
  2. Start your water heating on the stove on medium heat.
  3. Grate about 1 cup of cheese. This was about 1/3 of a full bar of soap.
  4. Dump your soap into your pot of water.
  5. Stir until fully dissolved.
  6. Let cool before pouring into your container(s).
  7. Label your soap container so you know what’s in it. I add the ingredients and instructions if necessary for when I’d like to make some more and don’t want to have to find the recipe.
  8. Let sit for 24 hours to gel. Shake periodically.

Just like my Homemade Liquid Dish Soap, this soap smells great, it was super simple to make, and it lasts for a long time. My husband commented the other day about how well it suds in his hands and that it makes his hands feel soft. Wonderful!

There’s no reason to have dangerous chemicals around your house making your family sick when it’s this quick and easy to make your own at home. My Homemade Coconut Oil Soap smells fantastic in this recipe, washes great, and just gives me a peace of mind that everyone in my house is using something to wash their hands that is good for them and won’t add anything to the process that doesn’t need to be there.
