Homemade Korean Garlic Beef and Rice

This homemade Korean garlic beef and rice recipe is sure to knock your socks off. It was quick and easy to pull together, and it's healthy for your family. Your kids are sure to enjoy this healthy dinner dish tonight.

For anyone who has ever eaten really good Chinese food, Korean food, or something similar, you know how amazing it is! Bold flavors, spices, and bright colors make this kind of food so delicious. Obviously this isn’t going to be an authentic dish, nor do I claim that it is so. I think it’s called Korean because of the similarity to the traditional dish.

It was another great, super easy recipe to whip up at the last moment and it sounded good. I have a few really great Asian dishes that I make with some really neat ingredients and this is one of them. It is definitely worth keeping the interesting spices around the house. As I already had hamburger cooked in the freezer, and onions dehydrated in the pantry, the item that took the longest to make was the rice.

I simply dumped my frozen hamburger in the pan, re-hydrated my onions, and tossed them together with the yummy sauce I mixed and poured it over rice. Not only did my husband and I both have 2 servings of dinner, my two kids at quite a bit, and I went back for lunch the next day and discovered my husband had taken it to work. It really was amazing!

My husband has charged me with making as many different hamburger meals as I could pull together, to get rid of some of the massive store of hamburger we have in the freezer, and this was one of those dishes. Quick, easy, and so delicious. I’m thinking about making it again tonight as I didn’t get any leftovers. For this recipe, you’ll want to have an organic soy sauce or some coco aminos, sesame oil, and white sesame seeds. I really think some chives would have gone well in this dish but I didn’t have any in the refrigerator or in the garden.

Let’s see how I put it all together.

I cheated and used my dehydrated onions and frozen hamburger for this recipe. So instead of cooking each of these, I was defrosting and re-hydrating. haha

Just before serving I poured in my sesame seeds. Yum! Now it’s your turn!

Ingredients

  • 2lbs hamburger meat
  • 1/2 yellow onion, chopped
  • 2 cups white rice
  • 2.5 cups water
  • 3 tablespoons minced garlic
  • 1/4 cup coconut sugar
  • 1/4 cup organic soy sauce, (or coco aminos)
  • 2 teaspoons sesame oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon ginger
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1/2 cup white sesame seeds
  • 2 teaspoons pink Himalayan salt

Instructions

  1. Start by chopping your onion into small pieces and pouring it into a medium saute pan on the stove with a little butter or coconut oil.
  2. If your hamburger is raw, you will need to cook it first before we do anything else. Dump it into your saute pan on the stove with your onions and cook, stirring frequently, over medium to medium high heat until browned through.
  3. While your meat is cooking, cook your rice, either in a rice cooker or on the stove using the rice and water. It should take about 30 minutes. I just pop mine into my Instant Pot and press the rice button.
  4. It’s also time to make your sauce. Mix all of your sauce ingredients together, minced garlic through red pepper flakes, in a small bowl on the side.
  5. When your meat and onions have finished cooking, pour in your sauce and mix well. Continue cooking for a few minutes, but turn the heat on the stove down to low.
  6. Sprinkle salt and sesame seeds over the top of your meat mixture and mix in.
  7. Pour everything over rice and enjoy! I suggest serving with a steamed veggie of some sort.

I can’t say enough about how amazing this was. You know, it’s easy to horde recipes when you love to cook as much as I do. And all of my recipes have writing all over them to tell me how I changed it last time, what worked and what didn’t, so I can improve upon them the next time I cook them.

However, it’s easy to collect way too many and to forget about some of the best ones. I try to put a star on the ones I loved and throw out the ones that I can’t get to work for me or my household to keep my collection a little smaller. But sometimes, like when your husband gives you a cooking challenge, you uncover some that you don’t know how you ever forgot. I’ll have to put this one at the front again.

If you really want to finish this meal off nicely, serve it with a traditional Korean side dish that compliments the flavors in this Garlic Beef and Rice. I highly suggest seasoned soy bean sprouts, spicy cucumber salad, seasoned eggplant, or even some stir-fried zucchini. Yum! This dish was the perfect meal last night with the cooler weather coming in. I think I even had a nice mug of hot tea with my meal last night.
