Homemade Cinnamon Apple Spice Cake with Caramel Apple Frosting From Scratch
So funny story… Typically when I’m trying to figure out a new recipe, I do a lot of research, looking at dozens of recipes before deciding on my ingredients. There’s no need to recreate the wheel, right? Then I make it, and remake it, adjusting my ingredients until I get it just right. Oddly enough, there were no Apple Cinnamon Spice cake recipes online, and definitely no Caramel Apple Frosting recipes. But they sure sounded delicious!
Well, I wasn’t going to let not finding a recipe get me down. In fact, that was awesome because that means I’d have the only one. Only thing is, that means I had to figure it out from scratch. I researched apple cakes and spice cakes, but that was still hard. Honestly, it really irks me when someone posts a recipe and it includes “use a Betty Crocker Spice Cake mix.” Seriously?! And that was the majority of the recipes I found. That’s not a recipe. Anyone could have done that following the back of the cake mix box.

Even worse, “then ice your cake using Betty Crocker’s Caramel Apple frosting” from the tub. Not a recipe. A recipe involves combining a variety of different ingredients from your kitchen to create a masterpiece. That is what this recipe is! Using my homemade applesauce, and yummy spices, this creation turned out so delicious. It came together fast and only took 35 minutes in the oven! I think you’re going to fall in love with this amazing Fall creation.
Let me show you how easy it was.
Clean Eating Whole Wheat Apple Coffee Cake

Clean Eating Pumpkin Cinnamon Rolls
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
- 2 teaspoons cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon pink Himalayan salt
- 1 egg
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup applesauce
- 1 tablespoon coconut oil
- 1/2 cup raw honey
- 1 recipe for Caramel Apple Frosting, (link below)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F and line a 9 inch round or square cake pan with parchment paper. This only makes one layer, so I chose a square pan this time.
- This recipe was so easy to put together. I started by adding in all of my dry ingredients one at a time.
- I like measuring out all of my dry ingredients first so that my measuring cups and spoons aren’t all messy when I need them.
- Then I measured out all of my wet ingredients into the mixing bowl.
- Mix everything really well and then pour it out into your lined baking pan.
- Smooth it out really nice and pop it into the oven.
- Bake for 35 minutes, until a knife poked into the middle comes out clean.
- While my cake was baking, I made my Caramel Apple Frosting which I will give you the link to below. I popped the frosting into the refrigerator while I was waiting to use it.
- When your cake is done, pull it out and let it cool. It should easily come out of the pan when you’re ready with a platter, as it’s on parchment paper. It even held together well while I transferred it.
- When cool, frost your cake. Yummy! This cake was amazing! Make sure to refrigerate any leftovers.

This cake was only 1 layer, so you could very easily double the recipe and pour it into two cake pans. Homemade Caramel Syrup or some Harvest Apple Jam would be delightful as a filling between the two layers. I only made one layer because honestly, I knew such a big cake wouldn’t get eaten around here with just my husband and I working on it. It gave me a chance to test out several recipes without wasting too much cake as well.
The Caramel Apple Frosting was a little more challenging to create. You can read my story about it here. I first made the caramel syrup, and then experimented until I had a successful firm frosting that I could spread, that tasted just right. I’m so excited with how it turned out! Keep in mind, this isn’t just any cake and frosting recipe.

I don’t use any processed ingredients or refined flours or sugars. So this recipe is not just delicious, but it is clean-eating and good for you. I used whole wheat flour, organic eggs, baking powder and baking soda, pink Himalayan salt, coconut oil and raw honey, along with my homemade applesauce, which is just cooked, blended apples. The frosting is the same; whole, organic, good-for-you ingredients. I don’t use white sugar, powdered sugar.
This makes eating very easy in my house, because we don’t have to worry about feeling guilty about what we eat. We just enjoy the food for it’s own sake. I hope you love this cake as much as we did!
